If you’ve had a Pap test and cervical biopsies come back showing dysplasia, a LEEP may be recommended as treatment for these cells. Dysplasia is not cancer, but can lead to cervical cancer if not treated. In this (in-office surgical) procedure your cervix will be numbed with a local anesthetic. Then an electric current is directed through a thin wire loop which is used to remove the thin layer of cervix containing the area of abnormality.
